Learn More from Dick Scott CDJR!
The Jeep brand has been dedicated to providing some of the most capable vehicles the automotive industry has to offer. This makes sense, given that Willys, Jeep's precursor, was contracted by the United States Army in 1942 to create a light-duty reconnaissance 4x4 vehicle to be used as transportation for weapons and troops on World War II battlefields. After the war, Willys produced the first-ever CJ, short for Civilian Jeep, and thus, the Jeep brand was born. Fast forward to the present day, and the Jeep Wrangler honors its heritage with a design reminiscent of the 1942 Willys Jeep MB and, of course, astounding 4x4 capability. The 2024 Wrangler continues this tradition with three remarkable 4x4 systems. Here at Dick Scott Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we are thoroughly impressed by the lineup of 4x4 systems that the 2024 Wrangler has to offer, and we're confident that you will be too!
Command-Trac 4x4
In 2024, Command-Trac 4x4 is the standard drivetrain for the Wrangler. Command-Trac is carefully crafted to deliver excellent on-road efficiency and performance accompanied by unrivaled off-road capability. Command-Trac uses a two-speed transfer case to give drivers a four-high and four-low drive mode, which can be selected on the fly. The 4-HI setting is designed to provide traction during on-road driving, while 4-LO should be used while off-roading at low speeds for better crawling control. Using a shifter on the center console, the Command-Trac system allows drivers to shift between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive at speeds up to 55 MPH. This creates greater fuel efficiency on ideal road conditions and greater traction while off-roading or driving through snow, ice, or mud. This versatility provided by Command-Trac is perfect for drivers who frequently transition from paved roads to rugged trails.
Selec-Trac 4x4
Selec-Trac, one of Jeep's most advanced drivetrains, comes standard with the entire Wrangler 4xe lineup and the Wrangler Sahara, while it is optional for other Wrangler models. This system offers drivers amazing versatility with minimal driver input. With a two-speed automatic transfer case, drivers can choose two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive automatic, and four-wheel drive low. When in automatic four-wheel drive, the Selec-Trac transfer case uses an electronically controlled clutch pack to switch from sending 100% of torque to the rear wheels to splitting torque evenly between the front and rear wheels when traction in the rear becomes limited. When shifted to 4-LO mode, the clutch pack is locked, and torque is delivered to all four wheels with a 2.72:1 gear ratio to provide higher torque at lower speeds, which is best for off-roading.
Rock-Trac 4x4
The third and final 4x4 system available for the 2024 Wrangler is the Rock-Trac system, which actually offers two different variants. Rock-Trac comes exclusively with the Rubicon trim, featuring a two-speed transfer case that offers a 4:1 gear ratio. This means that every four rotations of the transmission output shaft result in a single rotation of the wheels when 4-LO mode is selected. The result of this gear ratio is high levels of torque at crawling speeds, making it ideal for extremely steep and rugged terrain. The Wrangler Rubicon also uses Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles with electronic locking differentials to further aid in unparalleled off-roading traction. With locking differentials, torque is split evenly between each wheel on both axles, maintaining momentum on steep terrain. With the 2024 introduction of the Rubicon X trim level comes Rock-Trac full-time 4x4, which essentially combines the automatic four-wheel drive benefits of Selec-Trac with the 4:1 gear ratio of Rock Trac.Â
