Quadra-Trac I
As we mentioned above, three of Jeep's most capable 4x4 systems are available for the 2022 Grand Cherokee. First, Quadra-Trac I is available. With no buttons to press or levels to pull, the transfer case that Quadra-Trac I uses operates in 4-High mode full time, offering all-weather confidence. The torque is split by 52% to the rear wheels and 48% to the front. Quadra-Trac I uses a brake lock differential to control wheel speed on each axle to prevent tire slip.
Quadra-Trac II
Instead of driving all four wheels simultaneously, Quadra-Trac II operates in 4x4 until additional traction is needed and uses a two-speed transfer case. Using a network of sensors, this system can detect wheel slip at the earliest possible moment and counteract it by rerouting up to 100% of the engine's available torque to the axle with the most traction. Additionally, employing a two-speed transfer case, Quadra-Trac II has an available 4-Low mode to provide better traction at low speeds, making it easier to control the Grand Cherokee while off-roading or towing.
Quadra-Drive II with rear eLSD
Quadra-Drive II 4x4 with a rear electronic limited-slip differential is exclusively standard on the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk models. In a way, Quadra-Drive II blends both the previous systems to create the most capable 4x4 system available. Quadra-Drive II operates full-time in 4-High mode providing optimal traction on any road conditions. However, it employs a two-speed transfer case with available 4-Low mode to handle low-speed crawling better and towing. Additionally, Quadra-Drive II can send torque front to back and side to side. Using a rear electronic limited-slip differential, this system allows up to 100% of available torque to be sent to the single wheel with the most traction when slippage occurs.
Selec-Terrain traction management
All 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee models come with Selec-Terrain Traction Management. Drivers can control the Selec-Terrain system using a scrolling switch located on the lower center console to the left side of the gear shifter. Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Trac II offer Auto, Snow, Sport, and Sand/Mud modes, while Rock mode is exclusive to Quadra-Drive II. Auto mode puts the vehicle in control, detecting road conditions and making the necessary adjustments to the torque distribution and traction control to keep the car in control at all times. Snow mode adjusts the power output, torque split, and wheel speed to prevent slippage on snow-covered roads. Sport mode alters the transmission shift points to shift at higher RPMs, increasing power output for a fun-to-drive on-road experience. Sand/Mud mode optimizes the torque split and traction control to handle loose sand or muddy trails. Lastly, Rock mode will shift the transfer case into 4-Low and lower the transmission shift points to provide better handling and control at low speeds.
