What is the Difference Between Snow Tires and All-Season Tires?

These channels, called sipes, are designed to whisk snow and water away from the road surface of the tire. While the tread compound of all-season tires begins to harden at 45 degrees, it remains flexible at temperatures even well below 45 degrees on a set of snow tires. Studdable snow tires are snow tires that come without studs but have holes in them so, if you prefer, you can add studs to them. Meanwhile, studless snow tires use an aggressive tread pattern and a softer rubber compound on the tire's road surface to push snow away from the vehicle's track. Lastly, studded snow tires have either hard rubber or metal studs placed in the road surface of the tires to dig in and grip the snow to provide additional traction on snow and even ice.
